The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid Contemporary Fiction 400 pages 5/5 stars

Synopsis: Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn's luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the '80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn's story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways.

A mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means-and what it costs-to face the truth. *** Taylor Jenkins Reid did it again! I adored this book! It definitely met my expectations and I can now 100% agree with my Booksta pals, that this is a great read! As soon as I finished the first chapter.. I knew I was going to love this story. Another bonus for me is that I love short chapters so I was flying through the book at a very fast pace. The narrative, the glamour and the characters stole my heart instantly! Even though I was emotionally attached to Evelyn, Reid pulled my heart strings with most characters within the book, which for me is quite a rare thing. There were some important topics involved such as sexuality and it was conveyed so well. Reid’s writing is amazing because I get pulled in each time… I always feel like I am sitting in the story, experiencing each little detail from the side line. Would I want to be best friends with Evelyn? Hell yes! Am I sad she is not a real movie star? Of course! This has the same kind of vibe as Daisy Jones and The Six and I loved that too. Taylor Jenkins Reid has quickly become one of my new favourite authors! I know the hype around a book can scare you.. but please read this!! I wish I had it in my life sooner.
